The 2008 Home International SeriesTeam Profiles : Tom Townsend & David GoldTom is 36 and is a bridge pro living in London. He is a person of wide interests -rubber bridge, betting and even a bit of backgammon! Tom played on the British team that won the European and World Junior Championships in 1994 and 1995, and has won everything worth winning on the domestic scene except the Gold Cup. In the pre-Gold era he played four Camrose matches, one with junior partner Jeff Allerton, and three with David Price. David now 28 and a professional player, learnt to play bridge at school aged 16. After leaving school and finding that 1 year of a math’s degree was more than enough he started playing bridge seriously. In August 2000 he started playing with Tom Townsend, their debut together being the Brighton 4 stars which they won. He played his first Camrose aged 21 and since then has represented England in two European Championships, One World Team Olympiad and the Bermuda Bowl, as well as over a dozen Camrose matches. His proudest achievement in bridge was being part of the first ever English team to qualify for the Bermuda Bowl. As a pair David and Tom won a bronze medal in the 2005 European Pairs Championship. |
