The
Gold Cup is the most prestigious Open Teams event
in Britain, and is organised by Bridge Great Britain (formerly
the British Bridge League). It is knock-out throughout,
and, prior to the quarter-finals, all matches are played
privately.
As previously matches in rounds 1 and 2 are of 32 boards (though this may be increased to 40 by prior agreement between the two Captains). This helps considerably when fixing matches, which can be played in the evening, and you'll still get 2 Green Points for a win!
Thirty-two teams will be exempted to the round of 128 (normally Round 3). Of these 16 will be seeded. This gives the other teams an even better opportunity of winning early rounds, and a better chance of gaining those precious Green Points! The draws for Rounds 1-4 are regionalised as far as possible in order to keep travelling to a minimum.
With the exception of the 32 exempted teams every team will have a match in Round 1, and unlucky English and Welsh losers will qualify to play in the Silver Plate, which starts at the beginning of December, immediately after the closing date for Round 1 of the Gold Cup. THIS MEANS THAT EVERY ENGLISH AND WELSH TEAM THAT IS NOT EXEMPTED TO THE ROUND OF 128 IS GUARANTEED AT LEAST TWO MATCHES, AND THERE IS NO EXTRA CHARGE FOR THE SILVER PLATE FOR PLAYERS WHO HAVE COMPETED IN THE GOLD CUP. THE CHARGE FOR ADDITIONAL PLAYERS IN THE SILVER PLATE IS £10 PER PLAYER.
