Neil Rosen (Peter Kaufmann, Dick Shek & Gus Calderwood) seeded 7 were beaten by Stan Harding (Tara Harding, Mike Rawlins & Andrew Doye), and Cameron Small (Graham Osborne, Jon Cooke & Martin Garvey) went out to Maria Budd (Vernon Gaskell, Anne Flockhart & Malcolm Harris).

The fourth seeds, Tom Gisborne (Sandy Davies, David Banks & Sam Manavi) who reached last season's semi-final, have lost by 79 IMPs to the in-form Manchester squad of David Debbage (Jeff Morris, Alex Morris, Edward Levy, Mike Newman & Mike Byrne). The Debbage team contains three juniors, who clearly have a very promising future in the game.
